How to Resize a Microsoft Virtual Hard Drive (VHD) File

When you create a Microsoft Virtual Hard Drive either through Virtual PC or Virtual Server, you have to specify the maximum size of the file up front. While you can set the VHD to be a fixed or dynamically sized file, the total size the VHD is determined at the time you create it. Over time, however, you may want to increase the total size of the VHD file as requirements for the system change to allow more space for installed programs and data files.

Beta for Next Version of Microsoft Security Essentials Now Available

Today Microsoft is announcing the beta for the next version of Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft Security Essentials was first released in September 2009 and is no-cost light weight anti-malware service. It’s designed to help address the ongoing security needs of PCs running genuine Windows – helping keep people protected from viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

4621_mse2_323D2CE5

New features in the beta of Microsoft Security Essentials include:

Windows Firewall integration – During setup, Microsoft Security Essentials will now ask if you would like to turn the Windows Firewall on or off.

Enhanced protection for web-based threats – Microsoft Security Essentials now integrates with Internet Explorer to provide protection against web-based threats.

New protection engine – The updated anti-malware engine offers enhanced detection and cleanup capabilities with better performance.

Network inspection system* – Protection against network-based exploits is now built in to Microsoft Security Essentials.

* For Windows XP users: Please note that the network inspection system feature will not be enabled on Windows XP. This is because the network inspection system requires the Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) in order to run, and WFP is only available in Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, if you are running Windows XP, you can still use all other beta features.

To download the beta of Microsoft Security Essentials, click here to visit the Microsoft Connect page to register for the beta. Once completed – you will find the instructions for downloading and installing the beta. We value your feedback – beta participants are encouraged to provide feedback about their experiences with Microsoft Security Essentials through Microsoft Connect. Please note that this is a limited beta available in English (U.S.), Israel, and Brazilian Portuguese (the beta will also be available in China in Simplified Chinese later this year) and is available to genuine Windows users on a first come, first serve basis until the allotted spots for the beta have been reached.

Simple Drag and Drop Video Conversion for Android, iPhone, and PSP with Miro

How to Hide IP and Do Anonymous Browsing Using Free VPN Clients

Internet censorship is something which almost all of us, no matter where we live, encounter in one form or the other. Social networking or video sharing sites like YouTube, Facebook and Twitter are usually blocked in offices. Some sites, like Pandora, are country specific. And if you are in a place like China, well, you've heard the censorship stories, haven't you?

Even if you can visit the sites mentioned above using certain workarounds or tools, your school/company or ISP may record your recent activities, something you might not want.

There are online web proxies too, but many of them are of unknown origin and hence you cannot ensure complete privacy. So how do we hide IP and securely surf the web anonymously? I'd say VPN is probably the best and ultimate solution to bypassing internet censorship in a secure way.

VPN

According to Wikipedia,

A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. It aims to avoid an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can only be used by one organization. The goal of a VPN is to provide the organization with the same, secure capabilities, but at a much lower cost.

While Wikipedia's definition highlights VPN's commercial benefit, for users like us, it means that if we use a VPN service (like one we are going to discuss) whose servers are in a specific country, we will be assigned an IP of that location and would be able to browse sites limited to that country privately and securely.

Thus, if you're using a VPN service provided by US servers, you can visit sites like Hulu and Pandora even if you are outside US. Same is the case when you are in a limited or censored network and using a VPN to connect to that network.

Now, lets talk about some popular and free VPN services that can help you surf the web as freely as possible without worrying about privacy and censorship issues.

Hotspot Shield

Probably, the most popular one among all free VPN providers. Hotspot Shield is an OpenVPN based privacy and security tool, used to encrypt your web browsing when at public hotspots and to circumvent web filters.

Here are the steps to use it.

Download Hotspot Shield and then install the package. The newer version will first launch a download manager for the installation.

Anchorfree

After downloading is finished, the installer will launch.

Anchorfree2

The only thing I need to mention is that you may not need the Hotspot Shield IE toolbar, so just uncheck it while installing.

Hotspot1

Neither do you want to enable these options, I guess.

Hotspot2

Once you are done selecting the options, you can click install to begin. If there are any dialog boxes prompting new driver installation, just click "Install".

Hotspot3

Now you can double click Hotspot Shield shortcut, and wait for the connection. Right click the program icon in system tray to switch the VPN connection on or off. There is no need to register or pay for the service, but you will receive advertisements and forced URL redirect sometimes.

Note: Although HotSpot Shield is pretty effective, you cannot watch Hulu videos using it. It's just that Hulu is smarter. Most of the other US based sites work fine though.

Free VPN

Another well known VPN provider, Free VPN is also free and doesn't require registration. It has a forced URL redirect and changes the homepage to display ads, but you can buy a paid account to get rid of them (and also enable torrents downloading).

Download Free VPN and install it. If there are any dialog boxes prompting new driver installation, just click "Install".

freevpn1

After installation, launch Free VPN and you can choose a "FREE" server to establish VPN connections.

freevpn2

If you have a paid account, please switch to "Account" tab first, type your account information in the box, and then you can choose  any "PAID" server to connect in the previous tab.

One More proXPN

Apart from the popular free VPN services introduced above, here is a new one for our readers: proXPN secure your internet connection instantly (that's the tagline). All you need do is to register for a free account, then download, install and launch the client.

proxpn1

Oh, and proXPN is ad-free too!

So that was about free VPN services that let you hide your IP address and browse the web anonymously through an encrypted connection. These services can also be used, in fact should be used, when you are using a public Wi-Fi so that your internet usage remains secure and private.

Do you know of other such tools and methods to bypass internet censorship effectively? What VPN tools have you tried? Tell us in the comments.

Windows XP has got more life via Windows 7 Downgrade Rights

Windows XP has got more life via Windows 7 Downgrade Rights

Here comes another wise move by Microsoft, the company announced that Windows XP will continue to be available via Windows 7 downgrade rights. When Windows 7 RTM’d, Microsoft stated that end-users could downgrade right Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate editions preinstalled on a new PC would allow a customer to downgrade to either Windows XP Professional or similar Windows Vista versions for 18 months, or until the availability of SP1, whichever came sooner.

However another announcement has been made just before Official Windows XP SP2 expiration. Now end-user can downgrade Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate editions preinstalled on a new PC to either Windows XP Professional or similar Windows Vista versions until Windows 7 lifecycle is discontinued.

Brandon LeBlanc, Windows Team Blog says-
To support our customers “unprecedented move” to migrate their PC environment to Windows 7, we have decided to extend downgrade rights to Windows XP Professional beyond the previously planned end date at Windows 7 SP1. This will help maintain consistency for downgrade rights throughout the Windows 7 lifecycle. As a result, the OEM versions of Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate will continue to include downgrade rights to the similar versions of Windows Vista or Windows XP Professional.

As per current Windows lifecycle policy, the company allows retailers to sell the boxed version of the previous OS for up to a year after release of a new OS, and that OEMs can sell PCs with the previous OS pre-loaded for up to 2 years after, the launch date of the new OS. which clearly states that retailers will be able to sell the boxed version of Windows Vista until October 22, 2010, and OEMs will be able to sell PCs with Windows Vista preinstalled until October 22, 2011.

Add a "Up to parent folder" button in explorer for Windows 7

Adding-Folder-UP-arrow-to-Windows-7-and-Vista2

Windows 7 explorer no longer supports a “folder up” button that can take you back up to the parent folder. Instead, Windows 7 and Vista only has a back button. Below is to add a simple “up” button to Windows explorer in Windows 7 or Vista using a free program called “ClassicShell”. As its name suggests, this software adds a number of functions inspired by the classic Windows XP shell, including a classic “start” menu.

Step 1: download the latest version of ClassicShell (works on 32bit and 64 bit OS’s). The version I used at the time of this writing is 1.9.8

Step 2: run the executable to begin the installation. Make sure to uncheck “Classic Start Menu” (unless you in fact want it) but keep “classic explorer” checked.

Classic-Shell-installation2

Step 3: Open any folder then press ALT+T on your keyboard to access “folder options” in Windows 7.

Folder-options-in-Windows-72

Step 4: Click on the “view” tab and then check “always show menus”. And click “OK”.

Folder-options-in-Windows-72

Step 5: Right click in a blank area on the newly visible file menu then check “Classic Explorer Bar”.

Activate-Classic-Shell-Bar1

Step 6: Click on the now-visible “ClassicShell” icon to access the program settings.

Click-on-the-settings-icon1

Step 7: In the Classic Explorer settings, do the following

  • Check “Show Up button in the title bar”
  • Uncheck “Show caption in the title bar” and “Show icon in the title bar” — unless you want these.
  • Uncheck “Enable classic copy UI” and “Show free space and file size in status bar” — unless you want these.
  • Click “OK”

Check-show-up-button-only1

Step 8: Once you exit out of the settings, go back and uncheck “Classic Explorer Bar” — unless you actually like and want it. (Remember that the object of this post is to only add an “UP folder” button to Windows explorer).

Step 9: Go back to the folder options (ALT+T as in steps 3 and 4 above) and uncheck “always show menus” then click OK.

      C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\FORMS\1042

    3. After placing the cfg-file in its correct location, you still need to install it into Outlook. You can do this in the following way;

    1. Open the Forms Manager dialog;
      • Outlook 2007 and previous
        Tools → Options… → Other → Advanced Options… → Custom Forms… → Manage Forms…

    2. In the “Forms Manager” dialog, press the “Install…” button.
    3. Browse to the location where you’ve placed viewsenderaddress.cfg in the previous section of this guide.
    4. Select the file and press “Open”.
    5. A property window will open and press “OK” to confirm and close the dialog.
    6. Press “Close” to close the Forms Manager dialog.

    4. Now that the custom form configuration file has been installed, you can finally add the address column to your view;

    1. Open the View Settings dialog;

    What is ‘Moe.exe’ ?

Moe.exe (Mesh Operating Environment) is the core syncing engine for the new Windows Live Sync Beta, as well as the older Live Mesh.  The new Live Sync is based on Mesh technology, and includes the same syncing engine.  This lets you synchronize folders between your computers and online storage at SkyDrive.  Even if you do not use Live Sync, you may have it installed if you installed the new Windows Live Essentials beta.

You may notice it consuming a fair amount of CPU resources while it is syncing your files or checking for changes.  Unfortunately, Live Sync currently is slightly resource intensive; hopefully performance will be improved before the final release.

You may notice some other processes related to Live Sync.  These include WLSync.exe, which is the user interface for Live Sync, and WLRemoteClient.exe, which will be running if you are connected to a remote computer via Live Sync.

To make sure your files stay synchronized whenever there are changes, moe.exe runs automatically at startup.  If you need to free up system resources, you can exit Live Sync from the tray.  Right-click the icon and select Exit.
